A little custom quilting

The only quilt I've had on the frame so far this month is a baby quilt for my cousin's son, who just turned 6 months old. My mom made this quilt - isn't her applique great? She has had the pattern for ages, and the picture on the pattern was pretty dated, so I made her use more contemporary fabrics in the quilt, and she follows direction so well ;)  The fabrics are all from Crimson Tate, a great shop downtown.
Ruler work, lelele border, and stippling
For quilting, my mom wanted a custom job - all that she knew for sure was that she wanted stippling or loops around the applique to make it pop a little. After I loaded it, I decided to try a little ruler work. I haven't worked with the ruler since I got the Avante, and I found it to be so much easier to use with the Avante than it was with the HQ16. I think the frame that the machine is on has a lot to do with it. I did a lot of ruler work to keep the quilting simple, then added an "lelele" border. I used Superior Lava variegated cream thread on the top and a cream Aurifil in the bobbin. This thread combination worked really well together.

It was made extra sweet because we got to see the little guy this week. He had to come to Indy to have a little surgery and he came through with flying colors. My mom was able to finish the binding and do the 4,000 tie-offs just in time for his arrival, so she was able to gift it in person.
Me with the little guy - ready to be discharged and head home healthy!
